What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder resulting from partial or complete occlusion of the airways.

What causes Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is due to the collapse of soft tissue, which leads to blockage of the air passages in the upper respiratory tract. This blockage of air causes a drop in the amount of oxygen in ones’ blood and elevation of  carbon dioxide levels. Your brain then senses that it lacks a proper level of oxygen, immediately waking you up gasping for air.  Such a traumatic awakening affects your sleep quality and your daily quality of life.

Below is a short list of some of the symptoms caused by sleep apnea:

  • Daytime Sleepiness and Fatigue
  • Sexual Dysfunction
  • Headaches
  • Forgetfulness
  • Irritability
  • Depression
  • Difficulty getting up in the mornings
